As a service to our patients, we do provide nutritional &
dietary counseling as it relates to cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy,
heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and others.
Researches are discovering compelling evidence that proper nutrition may slow down or stop deteriorating vision according to the Better Vision Institute. Foods and dietary supplements that contain antioxidant vitamins-A,B,C and E-are necessary for maintaining good eye health. Antioxidants are substances that help prevent illness. Unfortunately, the human body is not capable of producing several anti-oxidants that the body needs and they must be obtained from a nutritious diet and/or vitamin supplements.Antioxidant vitamins are well known for helping to prevent cell damage throughout the body and recent studies have shown that a deficiency of antioxidant vitamins can make the retina more susceptible to damage from exposure to light.Cataracts, the leading cause of low vision in Americans over 65, are cloudy or opaque areas in the lens of the eye that form when some of the proteins in the eye clump together in a small area of the lens. Researchers have found That the nutrients found in common fruit and vegetables can prevent cataracts. Individuals who have diets high in green, leafy vegetables, carrots, collard greens, squash and broccoli are 40 percent less likely to develop signs of cataracts. These vegetables help prevent cataracts because they are high in two pigments-lutein and zeaxanthin. Consuming vitamins such as C and E may help to prevent cataracts by countering damaging molecules-known as free radicals-that injure cells in the eye. Damage from these free radicals accumulate and eventually causes the lens to lose transparency. Another nutrient that may play a role in preventing cataract development is vitamin B found in foods such as whole grain, meat, milk and vegetables in the diet.Macular degeneration is marked by a faded, distorted or blurred central vision, caused by the rupturing of minute blood vessels in this portion of the eye. The majority of people with this condition cannot expect to regain normal vision. Researchers believe that patients who are deficient in vitamins A, E and zinc oxide are at increased risk for the development of macular degeneration. Daily intake of these vitamins high in antioxidants affords some protection from the aging diseases of the eye. A nutritious diet including antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids is essential to maintaining healthy vision. We recommend the following supplements:
